TIMES SLEMAN, JAKARTA – Pemalang, a region rich in history and culture, is home to a unique tradition known as "Sumpah Banyu Taman". This ancient custom, literally translated as "Oath of the Garden Water," is a traditional method used by locals to resolve legal disputes. Despite the passage of time, this practice remains ingrained in the cultural fabric of some residents in Pemalang, often referred to as the heart of Java.

The essence of Sumpah Banyu Taman lies in the use of water from a specific pond, or blumbang, located in Desa Taman, Kecamatan Taman, Kabupaten Pemalang. This pond, known as Blumbang Beji, is believed to possess magical powers.

The water from this ancient pond is said to have immediate effects when consumed, particularly by those who are guilty. This belief underscores the pond’s role in the community as a means to ensure justice and resolve conflicts.

Historical Background

The story behind Blumbang Beji is steeped in local legend. According to Aisyah, the 69-year-old caretaker of the pond, the blumbang was originally located in the neighboring village of Beji. The pond's relocation to Desa Taman is attributed to a mystical contest of skills between two revered figures: Mbah Alif from Desa Taman and Mbah Menu from Desa Beji.

Mbah Alif and Mbah Menu were known for their supernatural abilities and mutual respect, though they were also rivals. A notable incident occurred when Mbah Alif visited Mbah Menu's house.

Upon his arrival, the door opened by itself, producing a sound akin to a person weeping. Mbah Alif interpreted this as a display of Mbah Menu’s power, feeling challenged but maintaining his composure.

Later, during a meal, Mbah Alif demonstrated his abilities by placing the bones of a fish into a handwashing bowl, causing them to reassemble and move as if alive. Impressed yet undeterred, Mbah Menu then challenged Mbah Alif to relocate the pond from his backyard. To everyone’s astonishment, Mbah Alif succeeded, and the pond miraculously moved to Desa Taman, near his residence.

Cultural Significance

Despite its new location, the pond retained its original name, Blumbang Beji. The tradition of Sumpah Banyu Taman involves the accused drinking the water from this pond to prove their innocence. The belief in the water’s power to expose guilt serves as a powerful deterrent against dishonesty and false accusations.

Sri Pamuji, a 67-year-old resident of Desa Kedung Banjar, reflects on the significance of this tradition. He emphasizes that beyond its mystical aspects, Sumpah Banyu Taman promotes honesty and discourages false accusations within the community.

Sumpah Banyu Taman is more than a cultural relic; it is a testament to the values of justice and integrity that have been upheld in Pemalang for generations. This tradition highlights the region’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring belief in the power of truth.

As Pemalang continues to modernize, the Sumpah Banyu Taman stands as a reminder of the wisdom embedded in its historical practices. (*)
